Designing a Sustainable Educational Oasis: A Vision for a Primary and Middle School in Rural Rajasthan

A Vision Rooted in Accessibility and Expression

Kutubna Cultural Center was envisioned as a place where voices from the Khaleeji, Arab, Middle Eastern, North African, and Muslim communities could be amplified. To support this mission, the design aimed to create flexible zones for various activities, including lectures, readings, guided conversations, and cultural events. Each design decision was made to foster accessibility and a sense of belonging, ensuring the space could welcome people from all walks of life.

Designing with Purpose and Resourcefulness

Given the constraints of a tight budget, the design of Kutubna focused on reuse, creativity, and adaptability. Here are the key principles and solutions we employed:

1. Revitalizing with Existing Furniture

Rather than starting from scratch, we reused and revamped existing furniture to carve out functional zones for different activities. These zones, ranging from reading nooks to spaces for lectures and children’s activities, are unified by a cohesive design language. This approach not only conserved resources but also aligned with Kutubna’s ethos of accessibility and sustainability.

2. Addressing Noise with an Artistic Touch

The loud escalator presented a unique design challenge, but it also became an opportunity. We installed a sound barrier that not only mitigates noise but also serves as an art wall on the upper floor. This wall adds a dynamic visual element to the space while providing privacy and separation from the activities below.

3. A Creative Cafeteria Transformation

An existing kitchen cabinet was repurposed to create a warm, inviting cafeteria space. Murals were added to delineate the informal cafeteria from the formal reading and discussion areas. This blend of artistry and functionality enhances the visitor experience while highlighting local talent.

4. Inspired by Transit-Oriented Design Principles

Drawing from the principles of transit-oriented development, the centre’s layout maximizes accessibility and ease of navigation. The flow of the space ensures a seamless transition between zones, allowing visitors to engage fully with the cultural activities offered without feeling overwhelmed.

Building the Future of Cultural Exchange

Kutubna is a testament to what thoughtful, resourceful design can achieve on a limited budget. By reimagining existing materials and embracing creative solutions, we’ve created a vibrant space that reflects Dubai’s cultural dynamism while honouring its regional roots.

As an architect and designer, this project has been a deeply fulfilling journey—a reminder that great design is not just about aesthetics but about creating spaces that inspire, connect, and empower.

If you’re in Dubai, I invite you to visit the Kutubna Cultural Center and experience how design and community come together to celebrate creativity and scholarship.
