Toronja: A spanish restaurant in Dubai

Work

Toronja is a Spanish restaurant in Dubai that blends modern design with rich Spanish tradition. Inspired by the organic form of the grapefruit (toronja), the design focuses on fresh, clean aesthetics with soft lines, rounded surfaces, and tactile textures, creating an inviting and sophisticated dining experience.

Focal Point: Striking Ceiling Design

The centrepiece of Toronja's interior is its bold ceiling design. Three large glass chandeliers, accented with gold metal detailing, serve as a sculptural focal point. These elegant fixtures provide soft illumination, enhancing the dining atmosphere and adding a touch of modern luxury to the space.

Curved Surfaces & Organic Design

Toronja’s design features soft, flowing curves throughout the space to avoid harsh geometric lines. Curved furniture, rounded tables, and smooth walls create a natural flow, creating an open, welcoming environment. The absence of sharp edges and angles ensures a relaxed, comfortable dining experience, aligning with the restaurant’s organic and modern aesthetic.

Thoughtful Lighting & Pathways

Strategic floor lighting guides guests from the interior dining area to the outdoor seating, enhancing the transition between spaces. The soft, ambient lighting ensures both functional clarity and a warm, inviting atmosphere, making it easier for diners to enjoy the restaurant's indoor and outdoor sections.

Spanish Nostalgia

a. The Swing

A swing is placed in one corner of Toronja in a playful nod to Spain’s rural charm. This whimsical touch evokes nostalgia for the Spanish countryside and adds an element of surprise, contrasting with the restaurant's sleek, refined design.

b. Arches

Arches, a quintessential feature of Spanish architecture, are incorporated throughout the restaurant. These arches help define different spaces within the open-plan design while adding a visual flow. This architectural element reinforces the restaurant’s connection to Spain’s rich cultural history.

c. Lime-Wash Walls

The walls of Toronja feature a lime-wash finish, a traditional Spanish design element that brings texture and depth to the space. The irregular wall cavities add visual interest, creating a tactile experience for guests. Decorative Spanish vases enhance the cultural authenticity, adding character while grounding the restaurant’s design in Spanish heritage.

Custom Branding & Design Elements

Every aspect of Toronja’s branding, from the custom font and menu design to the artwork and interiors, was carefully crafted to reflect a seamless narrative. The design celebrates Spain's heritage while embracing modern, minimalist aesthetics, offering a unique dining experience that is both culturally rich and contemporary.

Toronja’s interior design perfectly fuses Spanish tradition with modern elegance. Every design element, from the lighting to the textures, creates a sophisticated atmosphere, inviting diners to enjoy not only exceptional cuisine but also a sensory experience that transports them to Spain, right in the heart of Dubai.
