Work
Nestled in the serene embrace of nature, this private resort stands as a tribute to timeless architecture and local craftsmanship. Designed during my tenure with The Grid Architects in Ahmedabad, the project embraces the rugged elegance of raw Dhrangadhra stone masonry. Every element of this resort is a harmonious blend of modern sensibilities and traditional materials, creating an experience that feels rooted and refined.
A Structure Grounded in Local Heritage
The resort’s architecture is a celebration of the natural beauty and versatility of Dhrangadhra stone, a material known for its durability and earthy texture. The decision to work exclusively with locally sourced stone was both practical and philosophical—it connects the structure to its environment while supporting regional craftsmanship. The raw masonry creates a striking visual language, with each stone revealing its natural imperfections and textures. This unrefined finish is the essence of the design, offering a tactile quality that invites guests to connect with the land on which the resort stands.
Simplicity in Form, Grandeur in Detail
The layout of the resort is deliberately straightforward, designed to allow the architecture to speak for itself. The structure rises organically from its surroundings, with clean lines and bold forms that exude modern minimalism. Large openings and expansive windows frame sweeping views of the landscape, bringing the outdoors in while flooding the interiors with natural light. The stone walls, unadorned and unapologetic, serve as a canvas for the interplay of light and shadow throughout the day.
Interiors Rooted in Purpose
Inside, the design is a continuation of the resort’s architectural narrative. The muted tones of the raw stone are complemented by minimalistic furnishings and natural materials, creating an aesthetic that is understated yet luxurious. A standout feature of the interiors is the use of columns and antiques sourced from Mysore.
A Dialogue with Nature
The resort’s landscape design plays a supporting role, with native plants accentuating the stone architecture without overwhelming it. Pathways and outdoor seating areas are seamlessly integrated into the design, offering guests a tranquil environment to relax and take in their surroundings.
Sustainability at its Core
Beyond its visual appeal, the resort embodies sustainability. The use of Dhrangadhra stone not only minimized the environmental impact of transportation but also leveraged the material’s natural properties for thermal efficiency. The structure remains cool in the sweltering summers, reducing the need for artificial climate control. By prioritizing locally sourced materials and passive design strategies, the project achieves a balance between luxury and environmental responsibility—a hallmark of thoughtful architecture.
An Enduring Legacy
Designing this private resort was a deeply rewarding journey, one that allowed me to explore the intersection of modern design and traditional materials. Collaborating with The Grid Architects in Ahmedabad provided the perfect platform to bring this vision to life—a structure that stands as a timeless ode to the land and its legacy. Here, amidst the rugged beauty of raw stone and the serenity of nature, guests find a retreat that is as much about experiencing architecture as it is about finding peace.
